Black Eyed Peas

This recipe goes well with the Kadhi recipe below as this one is also healthy and almost fat free. The two recipes were given to me by a friend (thanks again Mayuresh) and so I decided to try them out and he was right .. they were both absolutely delicious and a wonderful combination. This can be eaten with rice or chappatis. In addition to a high protein content, black-eyed peas serve as an excellent source of calcium and are also high in vitamin A and folic acid. Healthy, Easy and Tasty.. a winner combo.. enjoy :)

Ingredients:
500 gms Black Eyed Peas
3-4 green chillies chopped
1 medium onion chopped
1/4 tsp haldi or turmeric powder
1 tsp garam masala
1 tsp dhania powder or coriander powder
1 tsp garam masala
1 tsp jeera powder or cumin powder
1 tsp chilli powder
1 tsp oil
3-4 curry leaves
4-5 cloves garlic finely chopped
1" ginger peeled and chopped
1/4 cup cilantro chopped
Salt to taste

Method:
1. Add all ingredients into a pressure cooker and cook for 3 whistles.
2. Remove from heat and when cool open and taste. Add salt if necessary.

Note: 1 can of black eyed peas can be used. If using raw black eyed peas, then soak peas in water for about 5-8 hours before cooking.

  1. love, love, love, black eyed peas, Mom makes it by the frying it though. She uses pretty much the same ingredients; heat the oil add the onions and when they start to get translucent she adds the boiled black eyed peas with the other ingredients and lets it fry till the peas just start to get brown. Which is a good alternative if you don't have a pressure cooker.
